In 2018 The Hospital Research Foundation (THRF) had our greatest impact yet!

We were able to invest over $24 million into world leading medical research and patient care initiatives to save lives! This includes an allocation to future research projects that will make a lifesaving difference in the community.

This has all been made possible due to the generosity of our donors and supporters of the Hospital Research Home Lottery. Thank you!

“This incredible support has helped us fund over 40 areas of research and patient care,” said Paul Flynn, Chief Executive Officer of THRF.

“There is not a single South Australian who hasn’t seen a loved one battle illness or disease. That is why we have expanded our support across all hospitals and across a range of diseases and illnesses to make a difference in our community.”

An overview of this amazing impact, made possible thanks to our supporters, can be viewed in our 2018 Impact Report.

Some highlights include:

  • Discovering that high levels of a certain prostate cancer protein relates to a poor outlook for patients, which opens up a new pathway to target for treatments
  • Identifying a blood hormone that could lead to a new treatment for breast cancer
  • Investigating the use of a 3D printer to print specialised immune cells for islet cell transplantation to treat type 1 diabetes
  • Providing assistance to children who have a parent with Post-Traumatic Stress
  • Establishing a clinic for women with pregnancy complications to help manage their risk of heart disease
  • Screening over 980 patients for a clinical trial into stroke, which uses Botox injections to improve movement
  • Improving gut health outcomes through faecal transplantation, for patients living with debilitating bowel conditions
  • Funding new equipment for South Australian country hospitals to improve patient care in the areas of cardiovascular care, renal, birthing and diabetes
  • AND MUCH MORE!

“Thank you to our donors and Lottery supporters for helping us progress these lifesaving projects. It was a huge year, but there’s still so much to be done,” Paul said.

“At THRF, for every dollar donated, five dollars goes into lifesaving research and patient care. This is because our administration costs are covered by our commercial business activities like our Lottery program, which also boosts our funds to research and patient care.

“Donors can feel proud knowing their donation has made an even bigger difference to the health of their community.”
