The Department’s research continues to focus on the major areas of cardiac, oncological and neurological nuclear medicine.
It is also involved in cardiac “hot spot” imaging of patients with an acute sympathetically medicated cardiac syndrome known as Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy (“broken heart syndrome”).
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Nuclear Medicine Department collaborates with other departments (e.g. Cardiology, Oncology) in a number of multi-disciplinary research projects. The main research focus within the department is in the study of changes in cerebral blood flow in conditions such as Alzheimers disease and chronic fatigue syndrome, as well as the treatment of rare neuro-endocrine tumours.
