Neurology Unit

Overview

The Neurology Department has two main research arms:

  • Stroke related research which involves both genetic investigations into risk of stroke, stem cell therapy to repair the brain following stroke, inflammatory pathways involved in stroke, and also Primary Health Stroke Prevention Research.
  • Clinical Trials investigate the benefit to our patient populations of new therapeutics in dementia, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis.

Research Focus

The Neurology Department has a number of areas of interest in neurological conditions including epilepsy, dementia, multiple sclerosis and stroke. The department has been very active in clinical trials of new drug therapies for each of these conditions for the last two decades, allowing patients access to new developments in drug therapies sometimes years before they become available to the general public. Some laboratory based research is conducted in the area of stroke, particularly evaluating the role of stem cells in repair of the brain once it has been damaged as a result of a stroke. One pre-clinical study looks at the application of Dental Pulp Stem Cells just days after stroke, whether there’s improvement, and how the underlying mechanisms can improve brain function.
