The Cardiology Unit undertakes its research largely in association with other TQEH researchers in Clinical Pharmacology and Vascular Surgery, and researchers in the Physiology Department, University of Adelaide, within the TQEH Vascular Disease and Therapeutics Research Group.
Research within the Cardiology Unit has an overall translational focus based on diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels, particularly in the ageing population and/or in women, and then developing the appropriate therapies.
The overall research focus is on development of new therapeutic models for cardiovascular (heart) diseases, utilising a translational, and “bench to bedside” approach.
Specific research projects within the Unit are investigating arterial spasm in angina, as well as the most common cause of valve disease and replacement.
There have been improved methods for quick diagnosis Tako-Tsubo cardiomyopathy (“broken heart syndrome”).
Other researchers are looking at the association between and polycystic ovarian syndrome, and management of heart failure and atrial fibrillation (common cause of irregular heartbeat) with the potential use of outreach programmes.
